The Rajah Muthiah Medical College was established in the year 1985 in the Annamalai University. Over the years the College has developed steadily into one of the finest medical colleges in South India and has earned a name for itself in the field of medical education.
Rajah Muthiah Medical College Hospital (RMMCH) was established soon after in the Annamalai University campus in a temporary building specially constructed for the purpose with 450 beds. Now the RMMCH functions in a sprawling new building complex spread over an area of 75.75 acres of land at Natarajapuram road, but close to the college and hostels with a built in area of more than 6,52,000 sft. of space and 1400 beds.
The First Decade
After getting started, the development of infrastructure of a Medical College was a stupendous task. The construction of an imposing college building and a few accessory structures including hostels for both boys and girls, satellite centers- rural and urban were completed. The MBBS course was recognized by the Medical council of India for125 admissions. The BPT & BOT courses were started during this period.
The Second Decade
The Medical Council of India recognition for 125 admissions was enhanced to 150 seats in 2003. During this period 18 Postgraduate degree courses in various Medical specialties were started. Later 10 Diploma courses were added. MPT course was started in 5 different specialties.
Buildings: The building of the collegiate hospital with 1250 bed facility was completed in October, 1995. In the college 3 air-conditioned lecture halls were added. A new centrally air-conditioned central medical library building, the PG hostel and the transport block were constructed in the second decennium.
The Third Decade/(Silver Jubilee)
Medical Education Unit
The Medical Education Unit takes care of Faculty development. It encourages training teachers in teaching skills & conducts workshops, seminars and Orientation programmes for postgraduate students undergraduate students and CRRIs.
The unit also orients students to the curriculum in the first year and familiarizes them with internship before commencement of the programme. Many orientation programs are conducted where the students are given lessons in Communication and Soft Skills and Basic Life Support Programme.
Rajah Muthiah Medical College Central Medical Library
A total of 22429 books are available in the Central Medical Library. 12 International and 18 National Journals are being subscribed. All the library activities are automated. An Internet section which is a part of campus network with more than 19 terminals is provided for browsing. In addition to this, a Reprography section and a Binding section is also available in the premises.
Academy of Medical Sciences
The Academic tempo of Rajah Muthiah Medical College is kept up by Academy of Medical Sciences which organizes regular monthly meetings where research work carried out by staff and interesting clinical cases are presented and critically analyzed. It organizes annual meets in which eminent medical speakers are invited for lectures.

Rajah Muthiah Medical College Hospital has a bed strength of 1400 with 17 modern A/C Operation Theatres. Hospital is equipped with all sophisticated equipment like Magnetic Resonance Imager (MRI), Helical Whole Body Computerized Tomographic (CT) scanner, Colour Doppler with Ultrasonogram, Colour Doppler with Transoesophageal Echo, Mammogram, Stress Echo, C-Arm, Ambulatory BP Monitor, Holter Recorder with analyzer, Treadmill, Endoscopes, Sinoscopes, arthroscpes, Colonoscopes, and fully equipped Central Diagnostic Cell with Blood Gas Analyzors, fully automated analyzers, Batch analysers, Elisa Readers, etc.
Everyday the hospital treats about 2800-3000 outpatients and around 1000 inpatients. Every year around 15,000 scheduled surgeries, 6000 emergency surgeries and 5,500 deliveries are conducted.
All the patients are given free treatment and free diet. Only a nominal fee is collected from the patients for a limited number of investigations. However, for the patients with financial disadvantage the entire treatment is free. The hospital provides rest rooms for the relatives of in-patients for overnight stay at a nominal rate of Re.1/- night.
