Government Medical College Amritsar was founded as a Medical School in Lahore in the year 1864. The campus was later shifted to Amritsar in the year 1920. The Medical School got upgraded to Government Medical College in 1943. Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital (earlier known as Victoria Jubilee Hospital) is also a part of the Medical College which was initially started as a general hospital in 1891. GMC Amritsar is affiliated to Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot. The college was initially started by offering admission to only MBBS programmes, but later started running postgraduate and diploma courses after independence. The college offers admissions to MBBS programmes with an annual intake of 150 students. All the courses are managed by the Medical Council of India. Admissions to undergraduate, postgraduate and para-medical courses are offered on the basis of NEET scores.
