The university was established in 1984 through the Goa University Act and started functioning from 1985. There are 61 colleges affiliated to Goa University. The university has 5 schools on its campus. The campus size of the university is spread over an area of 402 acres of land. Goa University is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council with grade A. The National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) has given the rank of 81 to Goa University in the year 2020. The university is also recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level courses are offered in the Goa University. Some of the popular courses offered are B.Lib.I.Sc. - NSS- National Service Scheme of Goa University organises awareness programmes like international yoga day, swachh bharat, disaster management, road traffic awareness, blood donation camps, PFMS training and many more. The members of NSS help educate the common people through these programmes.
Goa University Facilities
The university is endowed with many facilities. The university provides facilities to provide a comfortable environment for the overall development of the students. Some of the Goa University facilities are hostels, cafeteria, medical clinic, laboratories, bank, library, IT infrastructure, wifi and sports. There are more than one hostels available for each boys and girls students. Students can avail the hostel facility at the time of admission. Hostel rooms are allotted first to postgraduate and research students and then to other students. The university is fully wifi enabled and students and faculty members can access the facility for free.
There is an on campus bank facility. The university has State Bank of India on its campus which provides all the banking-related services to the students and staff members. The bank also provides 24X7 ATM service. The university provides both indoor and outdoor games. The indoor games include chess, carrom, badminton, table tennis, taekwondo, etc. There are separate fields and courts maintained for outdoor games like football, basketball, volleyball, cricket and many more. Goa University Admissions
Admissions to undergraduate programme, postgraduate programmes and Ph.D programmes are offered by the university either on the basis of merit or both entrance test and merit. Candidates are selected on the basis of merit for B.Lib.I.Sc., M.A., M.Sc., M.Com programme. Entrance may be conducted for Goa University admission to B.Lib.I.Sc. programme depending on the number of seats. Entrance test is conducted by the university for admission to M.Sc. Electronics, M.C.A., M.Sc. Marine Science, M.B.A Self Finance, M.A. Economics, M.Sc. Chemistry and M.Sc. Biochemistry. After that merit list is prepared on the basis of marks obtained in the entrance test, except for M.Sc. Chemistry and M.Sc. Biochemistry, where the merit list is prepared based on the qualifying marks and entrance test both. For Goa University admission to M.B.A programme and M.Sc. Marine Biotechnology candidates have to appear for national level entrance tests. Group discussions and interviews are also conducted for M.B.A programme admission. Goa University Scholarships
Scholarships are provided by the university with the aim of helping the financially constrained students in pursuing their dream career. Goa University scholarships are offered to deserving candidates and to those who meet the scholarship eligibility criteria. The various scholarships provided by the university are Research Studentship, Merit Scholarship and Free Studentship. Students at Goa University can also avail central government and state government scholarships.
- Research Studentship- To avail this scholarship, candidates have to obtain at least second class in graduation and minimum 55% marks in master’s degree. The candidates must be pursuing a full-time Ph.D programme.
- Merit Scholarship- To avail this scholarship, candidates should be pursuing a full-time PG programme and should have obtained at least 60% aggregate marks in arts/commerce/management studies stream and 65% aggregate marks in science stream in the last qualifying exam
- Free Studentship- Those students whose annual family income is up to Rs 3,00,000 and have minimum 45% aggregate marks in arts/commerce/management studies stream and 50% aggregate marks in science stream in the last qualifying exam are eligible to get this scholarship.
- Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Post Matric Scholarship for ST Students- Goa- Candidates who belong to Scheduled Tribe and have passed 10+2 or higher examination are eligible to get this scholarship. They should have an annual family income up to Rs 2,00,000. Under this scheme, Rs 550, Rs 530, Rs 300 and Rs 230 are awarded to Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 and Group 4 respectively.
