The history of the Chengalpattu Medical College dates back to days before 1965 when this was a District Head Quarters hospital with its building in the town. In 1965, the Government of Tamil Nadu upgraded this District Headquarters hospital as a teaching institution with 250 beds for clinical training. Vedachalam Mudaliar, the then Chairman of Chengalpattu Municipality, donated a vast area, which is in pocession of this institution. Today the college is under the affiliation of The TN Dr.MGR Medical University, Chennai, State of TamilNadu, India, and is wholly administered by the Government of State of TamilNadu. The Institute is a Medical Teaching Institute Recognised by the Medical Council of India,New Delhi, India. The college Entrains the motto of – Discipline, Service and Sacrifice. The Medical school trains nearly 500 Under Graduate and 100 Post Graduate from around the country in various Medical Departments. The College, Hospital Buildings and its hostels are located in a sprawling campus of 240 acres at Highgrounds in Chengalpattu, in the District of Kancheepuram, TamilNadu. The College campus is located within two kms of the Chengalpattu Railway Station junction, Intercity Bus Station and 30 KM from International Airport.
To begin with, this institution had an annual admission of 50 students, which was maintained till 2012. 100 students were admitted from the academic year 2012-13 onwards. This 50-years old institution was the 6th of its kind to be started inTamil Nadu. Girls students were first admitted in the year 1970 and the first batch of M.B.B.S.graduated from the college in 1972.
The hospital, at its dawn, was functioning with the basic departments which included medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, orthopedics , ophthalmology , otolaryngology, psychiatry and chest clinic. As days went by, other departments started functioning one by one, thus, making the hospital a tertiary care centre. The College and Hospital have well attended OP Departments and Indoors with an average of nearly 3000-3500 OPD on Per day. Average Bed strength and Bed Occupancy rate or 600 to 700 per month and 90-110% per month respectively.
Superspeciality departments include neurology , cardiology , nephrology , pediatricsurgery , plasticsurgery , urology, neurosurgery Cadres to the need of patients requiring haemodialysis, fully functioning automatic analyser, Radiology Department and fully functioning super speciality departments.12 Broad Speciality and Super Speciality Departments -General Medicine, General Surgery, O&G, Paediatrics, Anaesthesia, DVL, Pathology, Physiology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry trains 29 Post Graduates every year through All India & State Quota. The College also has Para Medical Courses (Bsc Nursing, Diploma Nursing, BSc Radiology, DMLT, Certificate Courses, Nursing Assistant and various technical courses). The Institute has a fully functioning multi disciplinary research unit through which many research projects of the faculty, students, ICMR, WHO are carried out. The Central Library with all the required books and journals are well decked and also has E-Journal access facility with Individual User ID, Password.
Chengalpattu Medical College, has 750 seater auditorium, fully equipped examination hall with surveillance system and modernised lecture halls.
The College Requires New Courses in various higher and broad speciality because this region of the country needs more medical human resources with adequate clinical and managerial capacity to meet the projections and health demand of the population growth. The Present proposal is a part of our holistic plan with emphasis on growth and Different component of Medical Education Focussing on.

- Better and enhanced employment of trained medical personnel in all areas of Chengalpattu and Surrounding districts of Kancheepuram to improve the emergency and immediate care of the patient.

- To enhance focused and robust health management plan to effectively cope with situation arising from natural and manmade calamities.
Hence it is a essential to try to have more trained medical professionals to cater to the needs and requirements of the society.
